Norman Barrett, comment on his award of MBE in the New Years Honours List 2010
Norman Barrett, commented: “I am absolutely thrilled, deeply honoured and humbled to be given this recognition in the New Year Honours List.
As well as being over the moon personally, I am also delighted for the circus industry, and all my friends and colleagues within it. Awards of this nature are very rarely given to individuals in my profession, especially when compared to other forms of entertainment such as film and theatre. This is a real boost for circus and in my view gives the art form the recognition it truly deserves and, sadly, in modern times, so rarely gets.”
Martin Burton, Founder of Zippos Circus, where Norman Barrett has been Ringmaster since 2001, commented, “We are delighted that Norman has been given this recognition in the New Year Honours List.
Norman, with his inimitable style and showmanship, is recognised across the globe as the world’s greatest living Ringmaster. He began his career in the Ring, presenting horses at the age of 12 and after over 60 years in circus, is still working with horses and presenting his world-famous Budgie act. This Award finally gives him the accolade he deserves.
People in the circus industry are very rarely recognised for their achievements, the role they play within the community and the pleasure they bring to so many. This award is long overdue for Norman and a triumph for the circus as a whole.”
